Washington State commission approves plan to help Avista customers

The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) approved a plan that will provide aid to Avista customers who have lost income due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The commission approved temporary changes to Avista Corporation’s Low-Income Rate Assistance Program (LIRAP) to provide customer assistance. Residential natural gas and electric customers that are having trouble paying their bills would be able to apply for hardship grants of up to $350 from current LIRAP funds. Also, the cap of one grant per program per year has been lifted.

Also, the verification requirement process to qualify for Avista’s LIRAP program has been shortened from three months to one month. This will help customers that have experienced a sudden loss of income get financial aid more quickly.

“I commend Avista for proposing these changes,” UTC Chair Dave Danner said. “We know that in these difficult times, many families will need help paying their energy bills, and we share the company’s commitment to getting assistance out quickly to those who need it.”

Local community agencies administer LIRAP funds, so customers who need a hardship grant should reach out to their local agency.

The company, which is based in Spokane, serves more than 250,000 electric customers and nearly 164,000 natural gas customers in Eastern Washington. The company has voluntarily suspended disconnections for nonpayment. Customers can call 1-800 227-9187 to discuss bill payment options.
