Duke Energy Renewable develops solar project with Colorado Springs Utilities

Duke Energy Renewables and Colorado Springs Utilities are developing a new solar energy generating facility in Colorado Springs.

With more than 220,000 solar panels on about 700 acres, the new Palmer Solar project will generate 60 megawatts of electricity for Colorado Springs Utilities’ customers. It generates enough electricity to power approximately 22,000 homes per year.

The site is owned by Duke Energy Renewables, which has contracted with Colorado Springs Utilities to use the power as part of a 20-year agreement. Duke Energy Renewables now has two solar projects in Colorado totaling more than 70 megawatts.

“We’re pleased to continue expanding our solar footprint in Colorado,” Rob Caldwell, president of Duke Energy Renewables, said. “The Palmer Solar project will support the renewable energy goals of Colorado Springs Utilities and allow them to reduce energy costs for their customers while lowering carbon emissions for the state.”

In the past six months, Colorado Springs Utilities has increased its renewable resources from 19 megawatts to 114 megawatts.

Duke Energy Renewables, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, operates wind and solar generation facilities across the United States, with a total electric capacity of 3,000 megawatts. The power is sold to electric utilities, electric cooperatives, municipalities, and commercial and industrial customers.
