DTE Energy offers $30-40 million in bill relief for Michigan customers in June, July

Customers of DTE Energy in Michigan will benefit from $30-40 million in bill relief to be released during June and July when summer electric usage hits its peak.

The boon to consumers comes from lower generation costs that are themselves a result of greater efficiency and lower fuel prices. While it is a matter of passing savings on, DTE noted that the action is also a continuation of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic relief efforts, in a state that has seen its state of emergency over that disease extended until May 28.

“We know that many Michiganders are experiencing hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Trevor Lauer, president of the electric company at DTE Energy, said. “That’s why we feel it is important to apply some relief for upcoming June and July bills to help ease some of the financial burdens being experienced by our customers and the communities we serve.”

DTE said these relief efforts will supplement already established programs, like the Personalized Service Protection program, which helps impacted customers retain service during the crisis through means like deposit waivers, payment extensions, and flexible repayment options. DTE also extended coverage for its low-income and senior shutoff protection programs through June 1 and extended a 30-day medical hold policy to aid those low-income customers affected by COVID-19, among other actions.

The electric relief also follows a lowering of natural gas prices for four consecutive months, from November 2019 to February 2020.
