Southern Power purchases 56 MW West Virginia wind facility from Invenergy

(Updates to clarify second paragraph)

Southern Power acquired its 13th wind project last week with the acquisition of the West Virginia-based, 56 megawatt Beech Ridge II Wind Facility from its developer, Invenergy.

The facility consists of 20 turbines that began operation earlier this month. Under a 12-year power purchase agreement, Southern Power has become the majority owner. The associated energy credits will be sold to a customer. Invenergy will retain a minority ownership position, and subsidiary Invenergy Services will continue to operate and maintain the facility on their behalf.

“We are pleased to announce the acquisition of our 13th wind project,” Mark Lantrip, Southern Power CEO, said. “This project marks Southern Power’s first renewable asset in the Mid-Atlantic region, and it is an important step in the continued growth of Southern Power’s wind portfolio.”

Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, now provides more than 2,100 MW of wind generation, thanks to this addition. That is a crucial part of a total 4,510 MW renewable fleet, which consists of 41 solar and wind facilities currently operating or under construction. All represent a trek toward the company’s eventual goal of low- to no-carbon operations by 2050.
