Southern Power acquires two wind facilities in Texas

Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power acquired two wind facilities in Texas, expanding the company’s wind power capabilities to more than 1,000 megawatts and wholesale renewable portfolio to more than  3,000 MW.

With the addition of the 174 MW Salt Folk Wind Facility and the 126 MW Tyler Bluff Wind Facility, Southern Power expanded its capacity to 35 solar, wind and biomass facilities under construction or in operation. Since 2012, the company has added or announced more than 4,000 MW of renewable generation.

“Southern Power is committed to strategically growing our wind generation portfolio,” said Southern Power President and CEO Buzz Miller. “We are proud to add our second and third Texas wind facilities as we continue to help meet the energy needs of our customers.”

The Salt Fork Wind Facility is located in Donley and Gray counties, Texas. This facility has 87 wind turbines. The electricity and associated renewable energy credits generated by the facility will be sold under two separate, long-term contracts. Salesforce signed a 12-year agreement for 24 MW and the city of Garland, Texas, signed a 14-year power purchase agreement for the remaining 150 MW.

The Tyler Bluff Wind Facility is located in Cooke County, Texas and has 52 Siemens wind turbines. Procter & Gamble is currently in an agreement with the facility to offset 100 percent of the electricity needs for all of its North America-based fabric and home care plants. Southern Power will have the ability to keep or sell the remaining renewable energy credits produced by the facility.
