Department of Energy invests $18 million in alternative fuel projects

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced last week that it will invest $18 million in five projects related to alternative fuel technologies, the development and demonstration of plug-in electric vehicles, and accelerated adoption of vehicles that operates on fuels such as biodiesel, E85, natural gas and propane.

Public contribution to advanced, energy-efficient transportation technologies and systems will improve energy security, support energy independence, reduce transportation emissions, and strengthen economic competitiveness in the United States.

DOE will contribute $2.9 million to Odyne Systems, LLC of Pewaukee, WI to assist in the development and demonstration of hybrid work trucks that require approximately 50 percent less fuel than a similar gas-powered vehicle.

An investment of $4.9 million will assist Blue Bird Body Company of Fort Valley, GA in the development of a battery-powered electric school bus.

Blossman Services, based in Swannanoa, North Carolina, will receive $2 million for a project focused on developing a 4.3L propane direct injection engine, as well as an emission control system. The control system will be demonstrated using a package delivery vehicle.

PacifiCorp of Portland, OR will use its $3.9 million contribution to develop electric highway corridors in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming.

Gas Technology Institute of Des Plaines, IL will receive $4.9 million to install alternative-fuel stations for technologies such as electric, compressed natural gas, biofuels and propane. The company will also deploy alternative-fuel vehicles. The project will take place along I-94 from Port Huron, Michigan to the border of North Dakota.
