National Grid launches new National Grid Renewables brand

National Grid launched National Grid Renewables, its new brand for its US renewable energy business, including solar, onshore wind, and battery storage.

National Grid Renewables is focused on developing, owning, and operating large-scale renewable energy assets across the country.

“National Grid has a critical role to play in the acceleration of a cleaner energy future, which is why we’re pleased to be launching National Grid Renewables to further underscore our commitment to reaching net-zero,” Daniel Westerman, president of Renewable Energy for National Grid, said. “In addition to being positive for our planet, developing new renewable energy projects creates jobs and spurs economic development in communities across America. We look forward to expanding our positive social and environmental impact as we look ahead, all while delivering strong shareholder value.”

This builds on National Grid’s acquisition of wind and solar developer Geronimo Energy in July 2019. Since the acquisition, National Grid’s onshore renewables development team expanded its pipeline of wind, solar, and battery storage projects with over 500 megawatts (MW) of announced contracts. Going forward, Geronimo Energy will transition to the new National Grid Renewables branding.

National Grid — which serves more than 20 million people in New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island – also released its Net Zero by 2050 Plan last week. Through this initiative, it seeks to achieve net zero by 2050.

“Our Net Zero by 2050 Plan outlines our approach to exploring a wide range of solutions until we can deliver the affordable, reliable clean energy future our customers want and deserve – no later than 2050,” Badar Khan, president of National Grid US, said. “We don’t have all the answers yet, and the path to both increase renewable energy and decarbonize heat will be challenging. We believe our electric and gas networks have a vital role in helping achieve net zero emissions, and our announcement today is the beginning of a transformative journey of our business.”

The Net Zero by 2050 Plan will focus on 10 key areas: reducing demand through energy efficiency and demand response; decarbonizing the gas network through the use of renewable natural gas and hydrogen; reducing methane emissions from our own gas network while working with the industry to reduce emissions through the entire value chain; integrating innovative technologies to decarbonize heat;
interconnecting large scale renewables with a 21st-century grid; enabling and optimizing distributed generation; utilizing storage; eliminating SF6 emissions; advancing clean transportation; and
investing in large scale carbon management.
