NIPSCO to launch 900 MW worth of solar projects to Indiana by 2023
A massive solar addition is underway at Northern Indiana Public Service Company LLC (NIPSCO), which announced plans this week to add 900 MW of solar projects to Indiana over the course of 2022 and 2023.
The Dunns Bridge I, Dunns Bridge II, and Cavalry Solar Energy Centers will bring enough power to charge 270,000 homes. They will come from three build transfer agreements with subsidiaries of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC. Those agreements will see NextEra build the facilities, after which NIPSCO will enter joint ventures with it to own, operate, and maintain them.
“The addition of these three solar projects and associated battery storage is an investment in the future of Indiana and the future of NIPSCO, as we deliver on our promise of bringing safe, reliable, and affordable energy to our customers,” Mike Hooper, NIPSCO president, said. “Renewable technology continues to advance, and we are proud to be working with NextEra Energy Resources on the Dunns Bridge and Cavalry solar projects as we continue to implement our ‘Your Energy, Your Future’ plan.”
Dunns Bridge Solar I will consist of a 265 MW project in Jasper County while Dunns Bridge Solar II will produce 435 MW of solar paired with 75 MW of battery storage, also located in Jasper County. Cavalry Solar will include 200 MW of solar and 60 MW of battery storage in White County.
All three projects were selected through a request for proposal run by NIPSCO and should begin construction in 2022. They factor heavily into the company’s plans to be entirely coal-free by 2028 and join five other renewable projects previously announced by NIPSCO.
