Arizona Public Service to purchase 200 MW of clean energy from Leeward Renewable Energy wind facilities

As part of a new power purchase agreement, Arizona Public Service (APS) will purchase 200 MW of energy from two New Mexican Aragonne Wind facilities owned by Leeward Renewable Energy.

APS will be able to harness this wind power by the end of 2021. The PPA will last for 20 years and cover both the repowered 90 MW Aragonne Wind project and a soon-to-be-built 145 MW Aragonne Mesa Wind project, both located in Guadalupe County, New Mexico. This is an expansion of existing arrangements between the two companies, as APS first purchased power from the Aragonne Wind farm in 2006.

“Renewable energy resources like this wind power are important to a diverse and increasingly clean energy mix for Arizona,” Brad Albert, APS vice president of resource management, said. “By working with supplier partners like Leeward, APS is advancing toward our target of having 45% of our generation portfolio in renewable energy by 2030 on the path to 100% clean energy by 2050.”

Leeward’s facilities operate on advanced GE wind turbine technology. While customers of APS will gain the renewable benefits, Leeward will gain significant generation capacity out of the arrangement, along with the ability to modernize its existing wind assets.
