National Grid makes progress on grid modernization projects in US, UK

National Grid is working on grid modernization projects on both sides of the Atlantic to facilitate low-carbon energy sources.

In the United States, the company is working on the New York Energy Solution project from New York Transco, of which National Grid Ventures is a part-owner. Across the pond, National Grid is developing the Hinkley Connection Project in the United Kingdom.

There are several similarities between these two projects. Both electric transmission projects strive further to facilitate the movement of low-carbon energy to customers. The New York Energy Solution project aims to better connect upstate New York renewable energy sources to the downstate demand centers, such as New York City. The Hinkley Connection Project seeks to connect a new nuclear power station, which will generate about 7 percent of the UK’s energy requirements, to customers.

Also, they both aim to reduce their impact on the surrounding landscapes. For example, the New York Energy Solution project will stay within the existing utility-owned property and reduce the number of transmission towers along the route by approximately 230. With the Hinkley Connection Project, National Grid will be removing 67km of existing pylons. Further, the company will put some transmission lines underground through Mendip Hills to maintain its natural beauty of the area. The Hinkley Connection will also feature the world’s first T-pylons – an innovative new design for pylons.

The goal of both of these initiatives is to decarbonize the energy system in both locations.
