Dominion Energy obtains 150 MW Invenergy solar energy project in Ohio to supply Facebook

Dominion Energy acquired the 150 MW Hardin solar generating facility in Hardin County, Ohio, from Invenergy this week, taking on a new operation that will allow it, in turn, to supply electricity to Facebook under a long-term power purchase agreement.

The agreement had been signed before the project’s construction and includes renewable energy credits as well as the facility’s electricity. Construction concluded in December, and a subsidiary of Dominion Energy will own and operate the facility.

“With this solar project, Dominion Energy is expanding our solar generating portfolio into Ohio, where we have a deep history of serving our customers and communities through our local distribution business,” Diane Leopold, executive vice president of Dominion Energy and COO, said. “We continue to acquire and/or develop clean energy projects for companies like Facebook that are looking to reduce their carbon footprints and to contribute to combating climate change. And we are proud to build on our Invenergy partnership that has already produced nearly 100 megawatts of solar generating capacity elsewhere.”

Dominion Energy now has more than 2,200 MW of solar generating capacity under its belt. Hardin also marks its first solar energy investment in Ohio, although it already runs a natural gas local distribution company in the area. The company owns solar arrays in nine other states and has nearly 3,500 MW of additional solar capacity in development.

“Invenergy is proud to further our partnerships with both Dominion Energy and Facebook, which reflect our commitment to sustainability that carries across our work with utilities and corporate renewable energy purchasers alike,” Ted Romaine, senior vice president of Origination at Invenergy, said. “Invenergy Services will also bring our award-winning operations and maintenance expertise to the project.”
