Intel joins PGE Green Future Impact program, allowing for 138 MW solar energy purchase from Avangrid Renewables

Portland General Electric (PGE) announced last week that it would be able to reach a 15-year agreement with Avangrid Renewables to purchase 138 MW of clean solar energy due to the addition of Intel Corp. in its Green Future Impact program.

“PGE is excited to work with Intel to enable their ambitious sustainability and climate goals through our Green Future Impact program,” John McFarland, PGE vice president and chief customer officer, said. “Partnerships like this strengthen Oregon’s economy and also help advance PGE’s goal to reduce the emissions associated with the power we serve to customers by at least 80 percent by 2030.”

Intel’s purchase represents the largest in PGE’s program, although it joins 17 other businesses and municipalities therein, all committed to buying clean power. The original program offered a 300 MW capacity, but with Intel’s own 15-year agreement with PGE, an additional solar facility was needed. That facility will be known as Daybreak Solar and located in Wasco County, Ore.

Intel alone will benefit from the new facility’s energy, which will go toward its advanced technology development and manufacturing facilities in Hillsboro, Ore. It will also purchase and retire associated renewable energy credits from Avangrid Renewables.

“Intel is excited to facilitate the construction of this new solar facility and provide our Oregon facilities with locally-based renewable energy,” said Marty Sedler, director of Global Utilities and Infrastructure for Intel. “We are proud to extend our commitment to sustainability and to advancing Oregon’s economy.”

Daybreak Solar will spread across 1,100 acres, with Avangrid Renewables handling development. It is expected to begin operations in 2022 and provide approximately $30 million in taxes and property owner lease payments over its lifespan. Additionally, PGE has requested approval from the Oregon Public Utility Commission to add 200 MW of installed renewables to address customer demand.
