Kansas Corporation Commission elects Pat Apple as chairperson

At a recent organizational meeting, the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) elected Commissioner Pat Apple to serve as the commission’s chairperson.

Current Chair Jay Scott Emler nominated Apple. Commissioner Shari Feist Albrecht seconded the nomination.

Governor Sam Brownback appointed Apple to the KCC in March 2014. The senate confirmed the appointment in April 2014.

Prior to serving on the KCC, Apple was a member of the Kansas Senate. From 2005 to 2014, he served in various leadership roles in the Senate including Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Utilities Committee. He also served on the Assessment and Taxation Committee, Commerce Committee, Confirmation Oversight Committee, Vice-Chair of Kansas Electric Transmission Authority, 911 Coordinating Council, and Chair of Telecommunications Study Committee. Commissioner Apple is currently the Kansas representative for the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission.

Before serving in the Senate, Apple was a member of the Miami County Commission from 2003 to 2005 and USD 416, Louisburg Board of Education from 1991 to 2003.

The Governor appoints KCC commissioners to staggered four-year terms. No more than two of the three commissioners may belong to the same political party, according to state law. The KCC is an independent regulatory agency for the state’s electric, natural gas, telecommunications, oil and gas and transportation industries.
