Consumers Energy and five non-profit organizations announced this week additional contributions of $5 million to help Michigan families with their energy bills this winter.

In October, Consumers Energy and several non-profit partners announced $12 million in funding. The contributions will help over 50,000 households.

“We are committed to doing our part to help Michigan residents who are facing hardship to stay warm, even on the coldest days of the year,” Garrick Rochow, Consumers Energy’s senior vice president of distribution and customer operations, said. “We want people to know that help is available and as close as a phone call away.”

The contributing non-profits, The Salvation Army, Michigan Community Action, The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW), the St. Vincent DePaul Society and TrueNorth Community Services, will provide financial aid directly to families.

Anyone looking for assistance is encouraged to call 2-1-1, a service that connects people to local assistance programs, or visit the Consumers Energy website.

Another Consumers Energy program, CARE, enrolls Michigan customers in long-term payment plans that helps them manage their energy bills by providing monthly bill credits, free energy efficiency upgrades and past-due balance forgiveness.

According to THAW, 40 percent of households in Michigan struggle to afford basic housing needs, including energy.
