Perry proposes broad-based energy policy in confirmation hearing

During the recent confirmation hearing for his nomination to Secretary of Energy, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry said that the United States needs an energy policy that utilizes all forms of energy.

“We need an energy policy for the 21st century that is focused on promoting American energy in all forms,” Perry said. “I am committed to helping provide stable, reliable, affordable, and secure sources of American energy. An American first energy strategy is important to create jobs and grow the economy.”

Perry also told the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources during the hearing that he believes that climate change is partially man-made and that responses to climate change should take into consideration jobs and economic growth.

“I believe the climate is changing,” Perry said. “I believe some of it is naturally occurring, but some of it is also caused by manmade activity. The question is how do we address it in a thoughtful way that doesn’t compromise economic growth, the affordability of energy, or American jobs.”

If confirmed, Perry would work to address concerns about nuclear waste, an issue he called a “daunting challenge.” The former governor does not support releasing uranium for Department of Energy (DOE) stockpiles, according to his testimony.

Perry also expressed support for the mission of the DOE’s National Labs and cited successful efforts in Texas to lower emissions despite a growing population.

“In Texas, we have a record of taking action to address environmental challenges, including climate change,” Perry said. “Despite a fast-growing population and one of the largest petro-chemical refining industries in the world, we saw our climate and air quality improve.”

Perry would replace Ernest Moniz as Secretary of Energy if confirmed.
