Puget Sound Energy, Mitsubishi Power agree to develop, deploy battery and hydrogen storage

A joint development agreement signed between Mitsubishi Power Americas, Inc. and Puget Sound Energy will see the two collaborate on the development of projects and technologies concerning battery storage and green hydrogen storage.

Mitsubishi is one of the first to offer hydrogen-enabled gas turbines and offers both long- and short-duration storage solutions. Today, it also has the world’s only standard integrated green hydrogen package, known as Hydaptive, which aims to incorporate hydrogen into other energy options. So Mitsubishi will get the chance to flex a bit with this deal, while Puget Sound will gain a major partner for the implementation of large-scale, carbon-free renewable generation and storage as part of its path to reaching net zero carbon by 2045 and helping other sectors follow suit.

“Our aspirational ‘Beyond Net Zero Carbon’ goal is built on the idea that we cannot get there alone,” PSE President and CEO Mary Kipp said. “We need leading organizations like Mitsubishi Power who share our commitment to combating climate change and creating a clean energy future that benefits all of the customers and communities we serve.”

Going forward, the partners will focus on further developing green hydrogen production, storage, and transportation facilities, creating utility scale battery storage systems and hydrogen gas turbine combined cycle facilities, and collaborating on cross-sector decarbonization options for synergy between the power sector and various industrial sectors. Further, green hydrogen storage assets in PSE’s service territory will be jointly developed.

“It is our firm belief that to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2045, we need to develop and deploy renewable energy storage projects of all durations in the decade of the 2020s,” Paul Browning, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Power Americas, said. “This means lithium-ion battery storage for short-duration storage and green hydrogen for long-duration storage. We believe our customers will be the heroes in achieving net zero carbon emissions in the power sector, and we plan to support them with joint development agreements like this one with Puget Sound Energy.”
