MPSC initiates proceedings to improve long-term energy resource adequacy
The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) recently began proceedings on improving the long-term resource adequacy for customers of Consumers Energy Company and DTE Electric Company.
“The Michigan Public Service Commission is initiating a program needed to ensure that Michigan’s electric resources are adequate to meet its future needs,” MPSC Chairman Sally Talberg said. “This process will put Michigan on a path to ensure electric customers have reliable power at fair prices over the long term, regardless of whether they are served by the local utility or an alternative electric provider.”
The MPSC initiated the proceedings in order to improve the speed and orderliness in which it can make relevant decisions. The commission will make related decisions with input from affected electric utilities, alternative electric suppliers, customers, and other interested parties. The proceedings will examine various possibilities for improving reliability, while taking cost-effectiveness into account.
The MPSC is responsible for ensuring utilities have adequate generation capacity for anticipated customers needs. The large number of recent power plant closures brought this issue to the forefront of MPSC discussions.
