TVA identifies route for proposed transmission line through Knox, Loudon counties

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) unveiled its proposed 5.4-mile route for a new transmission line running through Knox and Loudon Counties.

From a point between existing double-circuit lines, the new line would arch northeast into the Hardin Valley 161-kV station on Marietta Church Road. It will make use of new 100 foot wide right of way and largely utilize single steel-pole structures. When complete, it will serve a new substation planned by the Lenoir City Utilities Board and cost the TVA approximately $7.1 million.

Specifically, this upgrade will allow better service for Knox and Loudon counties through Hardin Valley. The valley is, according to TVA, the fastest growing area in Knox County. While the new route will require a new right of way, TVA selected its route to have the least impact on the given area, based on a mix of public input and analyses of social, environmental, and engineering impacts. Still, a National Environmental Policy Act review remains in process.

TVA will have to obtain easements for construction, operation, and maintenance of the line. Any property owners affected by the line will remain in control of their properties and will be paid for the easements at a determined fair market value. Surveys for this should begin later this year.

Acquisition of easements should follow in summer 2022, after which construction should begin in winter 2022-2023. It should be completed the following summer.
