An effort to enhance reliability for Ohio Edison customers finished this week, with the conclusion of updates to a 69-kV FirstEnergy Corp. affiliate’s transmission line around Morrow County, Ohio.

The 12.8-mile line upgrade included the installation of new poles between two substations and updates to existing equipment for the sake of better capacity and outage reductions. Separately, work continues on a substation located outside of Cardington, Ohio, that will involve new switches to better control incoming and outgoing power supply. That work should conclude this month as well, and all represent part mere pieces of a series of upgrades throughout North Central Ohio.

“The line was originally built in the 1950s,” Carl Bridenbaugh, vice president of transmission at FirstEnergy, said. “These upgrades will modernize the grid between these two substations, which is an important part of our efforts to improve reliability across the area.”

When finished, the risk of power outages for Ohio Edison customers should be reduced in the region between Mansfield and Columbus, Ohio. Additional work will be undertaken by American Transmission Systems, Inc. — a FirstEnergy company — over the coming years.
