Connecticut launches nine-year effort to build up EV charging infrastructure

The Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) approved a nine-year program to support electric vehicle charging infrastructure installation in the state.

PURA established a statewide Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Program that provides a combination of incentives for infrastructure — including electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) and fast charging stations – as well as rate design offerings.

The program will be administered by Eversource Energy and The United Illuminating Company starting January 1, 2022. PURA will work with Eversource, UI, and other stakeholders to ensure the program’s successful launch.

The EV Charging Program will offer incentives in five market segments: residential single-family level 2 charging; residential multi-unit dwellings level 2 charging; direct current fast charging; destination level 2 charging; and workplace & light-duty fleet level 2 charging.

“Today’s Decision is a pivotal moment in Connecticut’s transition to a decarbonized economy,” PURA Chairman Marissa Gillett said. “The new statewide program seizes the opportunities for ratepayers that come from electrifying our transportation sector, as the program will facilitate a proactive approach and seamless integration of new and emerging EV technologies across our state’s electric grid. Electric vehicles not only provide an opportunity to decarbonize the transportation sector, but also the potential to lower electric rates – a much welcome outcome for all Connecticut ratepayers.”

This is part of PURA’s Equitable Modern Grid Initiative, which launched in October 2019 to modernize the electric grid equitably.
