Representatives from Kentucky Utility Company (KU), along with Lexington Mayor Jim Gray and other community leaders, recently unveiled the company’s new publicly available electric vehicle charging station in downtown Lexington, Kentucky.
“Thanks to KU, there is a growing demand in our city for public charging stations for electric vehicles, and KU is stepping up to meet that demand,” Gray said.
The charging station is among the first of 20 stations KU and its sister Louisville Gas and Electric Company (LG&E) are installing in their service areas through a new Electric Vehicle Charging Station Program.
“The unveiling of this charging station today represents one of many we’ll be installing across our service territories,” David Freibert, vice president of External Affairs for KU and LG&E, said. “Building additional charging station infrastructure across Kentucky will help meet the growing needs of electric vehicle drivers and provide greater access to regional charging stations.”
Customers who use the stations will be charged an hourly rate. The rate may differ by location, but the average is approximately $3 per hour. The charging stations can provide an estimated power range of approximately 25 miles per hour of charging.
The stations features plugs that lock into the stand when not in use, digital display screens and quick-pay options. The utilities’ program also allows commercial customers to host charging stations at their locations for either public or private use.
