Exelon Utilities pledges to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, 50 percent reduction by 2030

Exelon Utilities announced a new goal this week that would see the company reduce its operations-driven emissions by 50 percent as of 2030 and further cut those emissions to net-zero by 2050.

“Our customers have made clear that climate change is important to them, and they want us to continue being part of the solution and pushing ourselves to do more,” Calvin Butler, CEO of Exelon Utilities, said. “These aggressive goals seek to eliminate emissions from our utility operations, provide needed support to state and local climate goals and give customers expanded access to clean and affordable energy solutions.”

These expanded goals will apply to each of the utilities under Exelon Utilities’ umbrella: Atlantic City Electric, BGE, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO, and PEPCO. Collectively, they supply electricity and gas to more than 10 million customers across five states and the District of Columbia.

These six utilities will convert 30 percent of their vehicle fleets to electric by 2025 and 50 percent by 2030 while focusing technology and infrastructure investments on energy efficiency and clean electricity efforts for operations. They will also modernize natural gas infrastructure to reduce methane leaks and increase the safety and reliability of their operations. This will complement their respective efforts to deploy smart grid technology, electric vehicle infrastructure, and other efficiency programs.

The 50 percent reduction goal will be linked to the emissions baseline of 2015.
