Atlantic City Electric, a subsidiary of Exelon Corp., is launching several initiatives to reduce its greenhouse gas footprint and help customers reduce theirs as it seeks to meet the state of New Jersey’s clean energy goals.

“Climate change is real and is having an impact on New Jersey and its residents, today,” Gary Stockbridge, Atlantic City Electric region president, said. “Recent flooding, tornados and severe storms have shown we need to take action now to help reinforce the local energy grid through smarter, stronger and cleaner technologies that will help ensure a clean and healthy environment for the future. We know we can’t do this alone, but we recognize the positive impact we can have in helping to be an important part of the change.”

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has set a goal of having 100 percent clean energy in the state by 2050 via the Clean Energy Act.

“We applaud Governor Murphy’s and the state legislature’s commitment to a clean and sustainable energy future for all New Jerseyans and support the efforts to help establish the state as a clean energy and climate leader,” said Stockbridge. “We strongly support these efforts, and we are taking steps and working to ensure these goals are achieved in an equitable and affordable way,” Stockbridge said.

As a first step, Atlantic City Electric has committed to reducing operations-related emissions by 50 percent by 2030, from 2015 levels. Long-term, the company plans to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This will be done in several ways, including using clean energy for its own buildings, installing energy efficient lighting in all Atlantic City Electric buildings and facilities, conducting energy audits to identify additional energy savings opportunities at its major facilities, electrifying 50 percent of the company’s passenger vehicles and medium-duty fleet by 2030, installing EV charging infrastructure at its offices, and encouraging employees to use of public transportation and rideshare, among other steps.

Also, the company said it is committed to helping its customers achieve their climate change goals by empowering them to manage their energy use, take advantage of clean and renewable technologies and reduce emissions. Atlantic City Electric plans to do this by launching new energy efficiency programs; creating a new Energy Marketplace to provide easy access to discounted energy efficient products like LED bulbs, thermostats, advanced power strips, and more; simplifying the switch to solar for customers; providing off-peak rates and other incentives to encourage customers to switch to EVs; and restoring service faster and more efficiently and avoiding power outages through grid improvements and its Smart Energy Network program.

Further, Atlantic City Electric will continue to collaborate with government, community, civic, and non-profit partners across New Jersey on actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save money and energy, and build resilience, the company said.
