In an effort to allow for more economic development and job creation in northeast Amarillo, Texas, Xcel Energy began work this week on an $8.4 million electric substation that will expand the area’s power capacity.

The company stressed the need for such expansion owes to steady growth in the region over the years, leading to a rise in electricity demand. This has been particularly true since development of the CenterPort Business Park began in 1998, and the end result is that as of now, existing substation facilities in the area are nearing capacity.

“A plentiful and reliable source of electricity is the foundation of job creation in Amarillo and the Panhandle region,” David Hudson, president of Xcel Energy Texas, said. “We’ve been a partner in Amarillo’s growth since 1925 and we’re excited to play a key role in the current expansion of business and industry by investing in the facilities that power that growth.”

The new substation will provide another 28 MW at full capacity. It will also be designed with further expansion in mind, allowing Xcel to shift electric loads to free up more capacity while adapting to any further growth potential. It will be coupled with planned feeder lines to further support voltage in the area and increase switching options for the larger distribution system, which will in turn help hasten restoration efforts during outages.

“Xcel Energy’s new substation is a vital part of Amarillo Economic Development Corporation’s recruiting efforts,” Kevin Carter, president and CEO of the Amarillo EDC, said. “Xcel Energy is an important partner in creating jobs and opportunities in the Amarillo community and has always been a source of reliable energy in our business parks. This will increase that reliability and capacity.”
