Evergy issues RFP for up to 1000 MW of wind energy

Energy company Evergy issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of wind energy to supply the needs of its customers.

The RFP is for wind energy projects that will be in service by 2026. Projects that achieve commercial operation by mid-2024 and year-end 2025 will be given preference, according to Evergy officials.

Further, wind resources must be a minimum of 50 MW and interconnect to the Southwest Power Pool (SPP). Siting preference will be given to projects that are located in Kansas. Evergy serves approximately 1.6 million customers in Kansas and Missouri.

Proposals must be submitted by Nov. 23, 2021, and all selected proposals are subject to appropriate regulatory approvals. Response and contact information can be obtained online at www.evergy.com/2021rfp.

This initiative is part of Evergy’s plan to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2045. These wind projects would fulfill the plan to add up to 1,000 MW of wind energy by 2026 with projects that benefit from production tax credits.

About half of the energy that Evergy provides to its residential and small business customers is powered by emission-free sources. The company was formed in 2018 when long-term local energy providers Kansas City Power & Light and Westar Energy merged.
