Glass Sands facility brings 118 MW of wind power to Southern Power’s Oklahoma operations

Work concluded on Southern Power’s 118 MW Glass Sands Wind Facility last week in Oklahoma, providing for operations at Amazon through a new power purchase agreement.

“We are pleased to see Glass Sands Wind Facility achieve commercial operation as this facility represents an incredible accomplishment for our employees and partners involved with the project,” Bill Grantham, Southern Power president, said. “This facility showcases our commitment to the development of wind energy and is an excellent addition to our growing renewable fleet.”

The 28-turbine facility is the 15th in Southern Power’s portfolio nationwide, and in addition to its electricity, its associated renewable energy credits will also go to Amazon henceforth. Still, it brings Southern Power’s total wind portfolio to more than 2,534 MW and its overall renewable fleet to 4,930 MW — an ever-increasing green network for a company spanning 14 states.

The site was built by M. A. Mortenson Company after Southern Power acquired it from Steelhead Americas.
