More than 1,700 crews and support staff worked in Massachusetts over the weekend, helping the utility Eversource fix damage that left more than 300,000 customers without services.

As a result, the company predicted that most work would be finished by the end of the day on Monday.

As of 10 a.m., Eversource reported that restoration on the system had reached substantial completion, which it defined as having at least 99 percent of customers in each community with power restored. Additionally, the company restored power to more than 400 critical facilities over the weekend, such as police and fire stations, as it worked to patch damage from a nor’easter whose wrath brought some services down multiple times.

“We know how challenging it is for our customers to be without power, especially in this frigid weather,” Bill Ritchie, Eversource vice president for Electric Operations, said on Jan. 30. “Despite dangerous conditions like strong winds, low visibility, and difficult travel that can slow restoration efforts, our crews made great progress restoring power to more than 50,000 customers overnight.”

As of Ritchie’s statement, approximately 54,000 customers remained without power throughout Massachusetts. The hardest-hit communities were coastal, including Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and along the South Shore and South Coast.

Eversource noted that, as it fanned out among its 1.8 million customers throughout the state, its crews were also working to clear snow from critical gas infrastructure. It asked its customers to do similarly for their gas meters to allow emergency access.
