Indiana Michigan Power to invest $56M into southwest Michigan transmission network

Last week, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) unveiled the White Pigeon Transmission Line and South Cass County Transmission Line projects, pledging approximately $56 million to build two new power lines and upgrade substations in southwest Michigan.

In the case of the first, the White Pigeon plan involves about 9 miles of 138 kV power line in St. Joseph County, as well as upgrades to the Stubey Road substation near Sturgis, Michigan. As to South Cass, about 3 miles of a new 138 kV power line will be built between an existing transmission line and substation in Milton Township while expanding the Surges Road substation.

“These electrical upgrades improve service for I&M customers in the region and support the recent community growth and economic development,” Mona Livingston, I&M community affairs manager, said. “The enhancement projects will boost reliability, reduce the likelihood of power outages, and speed recovery time if outages occur.”

To encourage engagement in the projects, I&M will host live presentations and Q&A sessions through virtual open houses on Feb. 28, 2022, and March 1, 2022, respectively. Community members and landowners are welcome to attend by either phone or online. Community members must submit comments on the new projects by March 9, 2022.

Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2023 and finish by late 2025.
