The National Association of Regulatory Commissioners (NARUC) Committee on Electricity appointed last week Minnesota Public Utilities Commissioner Matthew Schuerger to help committee efforts developing and advancing electricity policy in the United States.

Appointed chair by NARUC president Judy Williams Jagdmann, Schuerger will serve for a year-long term, though he may be reappointed for up to three consecutive terms. His term started immediately, though a committee confirmation vote will be held within 10 days. He previously served as Co-Vice Chair of the Committee on Electricity.

“I am honored to be appointed to Chair of the Committee on Electricity,” Schuerger said. “As the energy industry has evolved over my career, proactive collaboration between state regulators, federal agencies, and industry experts is crucial to a more efficient regulatory framework, and, more importantly, it helps ensure a reliable power system that meets consumer demands at a reasonable price.”

In his new role, Schuerger will serve the national nonprofit by working with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and affiliate agencies to improve national electricity regulation.

Schuerger has served as a state regulator since 2016 and on many national boards simultaneously. He was even elected president of the board of directors for the Organization of MISO States in 2020. Before his time in public policy, though, he worked in the energy industry’s private sector for more than 35 years.
