ComEd debuts three-year, free subscription-based community solar project for Illinois’ Kankakee County

Customers of ComEd in Kankakee County, Ill., could save up to $1,000 annually on their electricity bills if they subscribe to a new, community solar project designed to benefit low- and moderate-income customers.

Stemming from the Gar Creek solar project, this offer will host up to 600 customers of ComEd. However, the project itself is owned by Fosler Solar and was developed by Trajectory Energy Partners of Illinois. It consists of two solar arrays with a combined generation capacity of 3.5 MW.

Subscribers will gain savings through credits to their bills due to their share of the power produced by the solar array.

“At ComEd, we are committed to making the transition to clean energy as inclusive as possible, and the Gar Creek project will help us achieve that goal,” Scott Vogt, vice president of energy acquisition at ComEd, said. “Our partners at Fosler Solar and Trajectory Energy share our vision, and we are excited to work with them to provide qualified customers anywhere in our region with access to solar energy regardless of their income level.”

Anyone qualified for a subscription and living in ComEd’s northern Illinois service area can take advantage of Gar Creek. It is also part of the company’s larger Give-A-Ray program, designed to increase access to solar energy for low- and moderate-income customers. Going a step further, ComEd will also pay all subscription fees on behalf of customers and manage enrollment to the program.

Applications will be accepted through April 15, 2022.
