First three months of 2022 brought ComEd’s most reliable service period in company history

ComEd set a new measure for its service reliability this year, with the first three months of 2022 marking its most reliable electric service period in more than a century of operations.

“Utilities must continue to invest in the power grid to be prepared for severe weather events and the rapid growth of renewable energy such as solar and wind and electric vehicles in our communities,” Terence Donnelly, ComEd president and COO, said. “ComEd is a national leader in the use of advanced technologies to benefit its customers and communities and ensure the region remains competitive in attracting business investment and jobs.”

Last year, the company had provided some of its highest levels of reliability to date – more than 68 percent better than in 2011 when ComEd began a series of grid improvements. Those improvements have paid off for more than 9 million customers, helping them avoid more than 17 million outages and more than $3 billion in affiliated costs.

Grid improvements over the years have included the deployment of new technologies such as smart substations, smart switches, and smart meters, allowing greater real-time ability for ComEd to identify when outages have occurred, isolate and reroute power from problems, and restore power more quickly overall.

Reliability is measured by how often power outages afflict customers and how long those power outages last.
