Apple suppliers utilize more than 10 GW of clean power, avoiding 13.9 million metric tons of emissions

According to Apple, its 213 suppliers have committed to using only clean power going forward, leading to more than double their use of such power over the last year and avoiding 13.9 million metric tons of CO2 emissions in 2021.

This goal has led the companies to deploy more than 10 GW of renewable energy to date, but plans are underway to reach nearly 16 GW in the years ahead. That footprint will encompass 25 countries as Apple pushes its supply chain to reach carbon neutrality by 2030. Internally, the company has been carbon neutral throughout its global operations for two years but has also broadened its investments to include renewable projects worldwide.

“We are proud that so many of our manufacturing partners have joined our urgent work to address the climate crisis by generating more renewable energy around the world,” Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, said. “Clean energy is good for business and good for the planet. By sharing what we learned in our own transition to renewables, we are helping point the way to a greener future.”

Among its many investments, Apple has backed nearly 500 MW of solar and other renewable projects in China and Japan, as well as a Texas-based 2,300 acre, 300 MW solar project in the United States. In Europe, 11 new suppliers joined its clean energy commitments over the last year, along with 20 suppliers in Japan, 23 in China, and two each in the United States and South Korea.
