Between 2023 and late 2024, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) intends to invest in and bolster approximately $85 million worth of electric transmission network upgrades for southwestern Michigan’s Berrien and Van Buren counties.

Known as the Hartford Area Improvements Project, this investment will go into rebuilding approximately 15 miles of 138-kV transmission line between Benton Harbor and Hartford, Michigan, and another 18 miles of 69-kV line between Hartford, Bangor, and South Haven, Mich. Additionally, equipment at the Bangor substation will be upgraded.

Line updates will include swapping wooden poles from the 1950s with modern steel poles, reducing the risk of power outages. Line performance should also increase. Together, these efforts should strengthen the reliability of the overall electric transmission system.
