Trying to stay ahead of projected natural gas demands, Atlanta Gas Light announced this week that it will expand its liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Cherokee County, Ga., doubling its capacity with the addition of a second tank.

This will increase the company’s ability to store gas cooled to a liquid state when affordable and tap and ship it on demand for peak periods. By reducing natural gas to an LNG state, hosts can keep it at a volume approximately 600 times smaller than in its gaseous state. Later, they can return it to the gaseous state for use on a pipeline and for customers.

“LNG storage is a valuable asset for our system that affords us more flexibility to meet the increasing demand for natural gas from our customers,” Pedro Cherry, Atlanta Gas Light president and CEO, said. “The project helps ensure our ability to provide clean, safe, reliable, and affordable natural gas to the communities we serve when demand is at its highest.”

Construction on the facility is already underway. It will be completed in phases, with finalization expected in about three years. After, the increased capacity should support growth in the county and the surrounding region.
