Rocky Mountain Power warns against solar scammers

Utah-based utility Rocky Mountain Power issued a warning recently that door-to-door salespeople and telemarketers have been falsely claiming to be associated with the company while attempting to sell solar systems to consumers.

The salespeople have been taking advantage of the possibility of a rate increase to pressure homeowners to purchase solar panels immediately.

“Rocky Mountain Power supports and provides solar choices but does not endorse or affiliate with any solar installation companies,” Cindy Crane, Rocky Mountain Power president and CEO, said. “Our top priority is to protect customers from misleading or false sales claims.”

On Jan. 3, the Utah Division of Consumer Protection issued a warning that telemarketers trying to sell solar panels were claiming to be from a nonexistent government agency, the ‘Utah Public Utilities Commission.’

Rocky Mountain Power created a ‘warning signs’ webpage to help consumers detect misleading tactics used by some salespeople, as well as a checklist to assist those purchasing solar panels. Rocky Mountain Power encourages people to call the company to verify if a salesperson is associated with them or not and report incidents in which people falsely claim to be associated with the company.

“The Utah Solar Energy Association has been vigilant in its efforts to address the few bad actors who are making misleading claims to potential rooftop solar customers,” Ryan Evans, president of the Utah Solar Energy Association, said. “Adhering to the highest standards of providing accurate information is in the best interests of our customers and the solar industry.”
