CenterPoint Energy, Inc. announced Wednesday its Indiana-based electric utility, CenterPoint Indiana South, has received approval to add 335 MWs of solar energy into its long-term electric generation transition plan.
CenterPoint requested permission to enter into two power purchase agreements (PPAs) from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC). One PPA would be for 185 MWs of solar power from an Oriden solar project in Vermillion County, Ind., over 15 years. The other would be for 150 MWs of solar power from Origis Energy in Knox County, Ind., over 20 years. The power generated from the two developments is expected to supply enough power to meet the needs of 70,000 homes, or 12,000 commercial customers per year.
“The additional energy obtained through these PPAs will further CenterPoint Energy’s Smart Energy Future strategy and continue our efforts to bring clean energy to the communities we serve,” said Steve Greenley, Senior Vice President, Generation Development for CenterPoint Energy. “We appreciate the continued efforts of Oriden and Origis Energy as they bring these projects to fruition and thank their leadership teams as well as the community partners in Vermillion and Knox Counties.”
The PPAs are the company’s latest components of its Smart Energy Future Plan that support stakeholder sustainability goals while implementing a cost-effective, well-balanced energy mix for its 150,000 customers in southwest Indiana. The company said it is focused on achieving a goal of net zero Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 through building out renewable resources.
