According to the AES Corporation, some 450 MW of renewable energy and 225 MW of battery energy storage will be supplied to marketing giant Amazon as part of two Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

The battery side of things will focus on 4-hour duration battery energy storage and be supplied with assistance from Fluence. All energy will be delivered through the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) market.

“AES is proud to support Amazon’s bold actions to power its business operations, including its AWS data centers, with 100 percent renewable energy,” AES President and CEO Andrés Gluski said. “Together with Amazon, we’re showing how customized energy solutions and innovative thinking can help organizations of all kinds to decarbonize their operations and the grid.”

Amazon’s stated global operations goal is to achieve 100 percent renewable energy by 2025. It also seeks to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040. To date, it is the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy worldwide. Meanwhile, for AES, this new pair of PPAs represent a chunk of the nearly 5 GW of new agreements it signed in 2021.
