CenterPoint Energy Indiana South issued a request for proposals this week for various generation technologies, including renewables, thermal, demand-side, and load-modifying resources, as well as short-term capacity, focusing on 2023-2025.

This combination of new resources will seek to address the growing needs of the company’s 150,000 electric customers in southwestern Indiana. Eligible applicants would include power purchase agreements and asset purchases alike, be they in development, demand-side contracts, or capacity only contracts.

“As we continue our electric generation resource transition, we are looking for additional resources that can contribute to our diversified portfolio to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective electric service to our customers,” Steve Greenley, senior vice president of generation development for CenterPoint, said.

Whatever way the RFP goes, CenterPoint noted that it will help the company identify additional generation technologies in pursuit of new capacity by no later than March 1, 2027. Selections will also supplement the company’s 2022 Integrated Resource Plan, meant to be released later this year.

Renewables could include wind, solar, and battery storage. Thermal items include coal and natural gas-fired generation, hydrogen, nuclear, and others, while the demand side could be standalone or aggregated, but capable of providing accredited capacity.
