AEP Appalachian Power seeks proposals for it to purchase up to 200 MW of solar or wind generation projects
Looking to add more clean energy options for its customers, AEP Appalachian Power announced a new request for proposals (RFP) this week that would enable it to purchase up to 200 MW of solar and/or wind generation.
Issued by the Kingsport Power Company – operating as AEP Appalachian Power in northeast Tennessee – the request focuses on purchase and sale agreements. Applicable facilities would need to be at least 50 MW in capacity and be operational by Dec. 15, 2025. They would also need to be interconnected to the independent regional transmission organization overseeing the area, PJM. Single or multiple facilities may net purchase agreements from Appalachian Power.
“Appalachian Power and our AEP sister companies together produce 7,100 megawatts of renewable energy,” Appalachian Power President and COO Chris Beam said. “Renewable energy is what many customers are asking for, and one of the ways we’re meeting that need is by reaching out to developers of solar and wind to see what opportunities are available to add more reliable, affordable clean energy to our mix.”
The acquisition could benefit AEP Appalachian Power’s approximately 48,000 retail customers. Developers with proposals have until July 11, 2022, to submit them. After winners are selected by Appalachian Power, their proposals will be put forth for scrutiny by regulatory authorities.
