Puget Sound Energy (PSA) in Bellevue, Wash., announced Thursday that it will launch a voluntary Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) program as part of its goal to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2045.

Through the RNG program, the company will provide renters, homeowners, and businesses with the ability to replace a portion of their conventional natural gas usage with carbon neutral renewable natural gas. PSE is the first company in the country to provide the RNG program. For every block of RNG a customer purchases, the company said, they will see a credit on their bill for an equivalent amount of conventional natural gas not used. More than 1,200 PSE customers have enrolled in the program since December 2021.

“PSE appreciates the opportunity to partner with Klickitat Public Utility District to help transform the methane from this landfill into a refined source of fuel,” said Will Einstein, PSE Director of New Product Development. “RNG gives our customers another way to reduce their carbon footprint and productively use renewable natural gas in their homes and businesses.”

The RNG supply comes exclusively from a long-term contract with Klickitat Public Utility District, the company said, using methane from a Washington landfill. The methane is then captured, processed into renewable natural gas, and added directly to PSE’s natural gas system.

The program is part of PSE’s Beyond Net Zero Carbon goal, in which the company aims to reach net zero carbon emissions for natural gas used in customer homes and businesses by 2045, with an interim target of a 30 percent reduction in emissions by 2030.
