Con Edison filed a project this week with the New York State Public Service Commission that will provide battery storage technology to customers in New York City.

The project, titled Storage on Demand, will deploy batteries that can release one megawatt into the grid for four hours. The project will consist of two mobile battery trailers and one mobile electric switchgear trailer.

Con Edison will decide which neighborhoods to place the batteries in based on the electricity needs of its electricity networks. The company plans to complete the project by the summer of 2018.

“Battery storage technology is advancing quickly and can provide us with another tool to keep our service reliable on the days our customers need it the most,” Matthew Ketschke, Con Edison’s vice president, Distributed Resource Integration, said. “Battery storage can also help us defer making upgrades to our infrastructure, saving our customers money.”

Con Edison will develop and build the units at NRG’s generating station in Astoria, Queens through a partnership with the company.

Storage on Demand is the second battery storage development project that Con Edison has filed this year. In the project, Con Edison will work with microgrid developer GI Energy to place one megawatt/ one megawatt hour batteries at the properties of four customers.
