Graduate students, municipalities, and schools will benefit from a mutual arrangement between Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) and Sustainable Jersey in sponsorship of an effort by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) Climate Corps Fellowship program.

That program places graduate students with municipalities and school districts to evaluate and pursue projects that improve energy performance. For JCP&L, this marks the second year of sponsorship as one of several New Jersey utilities sponsoring the 2022 fellowship. Sustainable Jersey is a network of local municipalities and school districts that work with state agencies and nonprofit organizations to improve sustainability. It serves as administrator of the EDF program alongside the College of New Jersey.

“New Jersey’s commitment to being a leader in clean energy and energy efficiency is part of what makes our state such a fantastic place to live and work,” Jim Fakult, president of New Jersey operations for FirstEnergy, the parent company of JCP&L, said. “Improving energy efficiency will provide long-term environmental and economic benefits for our communities, and we’re proud to welcome the 2022 class of EDF Fellows.”

This year, six fellows were paired with 17 municipalities and three school districts in Atlantic, Cape May, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Sussex, and Union counties. In the JCP&L service area, Tewksbury Township, Helmetta Borough, Chatham Borough, and Summit Public Schools will all benefit.

Therein, fellows could conduct energy audits, develop clean energy action plans, train local officials to better monitor energy performance, and more.
