Evergy wind farms expand renewable energy production beyond 100 million megawatt hours
The Kansas and Missouri-based Evergy, Inc. achieved a major milestone for its renewable energy production this week, as the wind farms it has spent more than a decade deploying achieved more than 100 million megawatt hours of production.
The company continues to invest in both wind and solar energy, alongside expanded energy efficiency programs. Last year, its wind efforts accounted for 56 percent of Evergy’s retail customers’ usage, and that portfolio now totals 4,400 MW of owned and contracted wind generation. Since 2001, it noted that its wind resources have increased more than 3,800 percent.
Like many energy companies nowadays, these efforts are driven at least in part by the presence of an internal net-zero carbon goal. For Evergy, that goal is set for 2045. At present, though, its energy sources still include coal and fuel oil as well as gas, wind, solar, nuclear, biogas, and hydroelectric.
The company maintains that the balance is a benefit, allowing it a more flexible system to confront variances in fuel price, extreme weather events, and other factors beyond its control.
