Since beginning deployment in July 2020, Ameren Missouri announced this week that approximately half of its customers have access to smart electric meters in its service territory, thanks to a Smart Energy Plan running a full year ahead of schedule.

Smart meters are two-way communication devices meant to nullify the need for service technicians most of the time. They allow speedier identification of outages and, thus, hasten the restoration process through greater insight. Additionally, they allow users access to their own energy usage data to allow for more informed decisions on how to manage their households.

“These smart meters replace 20-year-old technology and give customers more convenience, choice, and control over their home energy use,” said Jeff Esserman, director of the smart meter program at Ameren Missouri. “We’re pacing to complete the full project in just four years instead of five to give more customers access to the benefits of this technology sooner.”

To date, this has benefited customers in St. Louis, Missouri, as well as those in St. Charles County and most of St. Louis County. Ameren noted that the remainder of St. Louis County should have smart meters deployed by the end of the year. All of its customers – including 1.2 million electric and 135,000 natural gas customers – should host them by 2024.
