Atlanta Gas Light places roof over second Georgia LNG storage facility tank

Progress continues full steam for Atlanta Gas Light LNG storage facilities in Cherokee County, Georgia, as last week, the company’s second LNG storage facility gained a domed rooftop.

While construction of the larger facility has been underway since November 2021, with phased construction to run through the next three years, roof completion allows workers to shift to the inner LNG containment shell. When finished, it will be capable of storing approximately 2 billion standard cubic feet of natural gas for the region and effectively double the facility’s capacity.

“Placement of the LNG storage tank roof is a major milestone for the project, reflecting the hard work and dedication of our team as we transition this facility closer to operation,” Pedro Cherry, Atlanta Gas Light president and CEO, said. “This LNG project is critical natural gas infrastructure necessary to continue providing fuel to our customers safely and reliably in the decades when demand is at its highest.”

Other advantages provided by the facility include more ability to store gas when it’s affordable for access during periods of peak demand. By storing the natural gas as LNG, its volume is about 600 times smaller than the gaseous state used for customers in a natural gas pipeline. It is cooled to reach LNG state for storage but can be re-gasified as needed for use.
