San Diego Gas & Electric orders 39 MW of microgrid storage from Mitsubishi Power

To improve capacity and resiliency for the summer, San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) announced last week that it would add four microgrid projects from Mitsubishi Power’s Emerald storage solutions, amounting to 39 MW of power or 180 MW hours.

These additional bits of power will help SDG&E provide for its 3.7 million customers through interconnection to existing infrastructure in the San Diego region. Respectively, the projects include the Elliot, Clairemont, Paradise, and Boulevard microgrid BESS projects. Each will include an Emerald Integrated Plant Controller, which is both an Energy Management System as well as a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system containing both real-time battery energy storage system (BESS) operations and a monitoring control platform.

All projects were approved by the California Public Utilities Commission in June and should be online by mid-2023.

“We live in a time when growing threats from climate change and extreme heat waves can increasingly impact grid reliability,” Fernando Valero, SDG&E Director of Advanced Clean Technology, said. “By expanding our energy storage portfolio, we are helping our region and critical community facilities become more resilient.”

Mitsubishi Power will supply SDG&E through its Emerald storage solutions through a 10-year long-term service agreement. Through these solutions, SDG&E will be able to further guarantee power for critical public service facilities during periods of peak demand or unexpected outages.
