DTE Energy recently issued a request for proposal to potentially purchase a natural gas power plant within Michigan’s Lower Peninsula with a generating capacity of up to 1,200 megawatts.
DTE is seeking to replace three coal-fired plants that are scheduled for retirement in 2023. Plants involved in proposals must be located within the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) Zone Seven, which covers the majority of the Lower Peninsula.
The company will evaluate proposals along with its plans to construct a natural gas turbine plant that is expected to be located on existing DTE property neighboring the Belle River power plant in China Township, Michigan.
“While we have announced plans to build a new natural gas plant, DTE is assessing all options for new power capacity, including the purchase of a natural gas plant to produce electricity,” DTE Electric President Trevor Lauer said. “It is DTE’s responsibility to ensure our investment decisions meet our customers’ energy needs – with affordability and reliability among our top priorities. These important decisions will play a significant role in shaping DTE’s future power capacity.”
This new facility will add to DTE’s recent natural gas generating capacity acquisitions. The company acquired the 732-megawatt Renaissance Power Plant in Carson City and the 350-megawatt Dean Peaker Plant in East China Township in 2015.
Notices of Intent to Bid must be submitted by March 17, 2017, and bids are due by 5 p.m. (EST) on April 14.
