Xcel Energy to test Ambri’s storage technology at SolarTAC in Colorado

Xcel Energy said it will use the world-class Solar Technology Acceleration Center (SolarTAC) in Colorado to demonstrate the energy storage technology produced by Marlborough, Mass.-based Ambri and help Xcel meet its carbon reduction objectives.

Ambri’s Liquid Metal battery energy system will be used to support Xcel Energy’s renewable energy and economic development goals.

In 2018, Xcel Energy, based in Minneapolis, became the first utility in the industry to set a long-term goal of providing its customers with zero-carbon electricity by 2050. Xcel Energy is looking to Ambri’s Liquid Metal battery technology to help achieve those clean energy goals.

The year-long energy storage project will be installed at SolarTAC in Aurora, Colo., a facility where advanced solar and distribution technologies have been tested in a grid-connected environment since 2011. Xcel Energy is a founding member of SolarTAC, which is managed and operated by MRIGlobal.
