According to the MDU Resources Group, Inc.’s 2021 sustainability report released this week, the company has committed its natural gas pipeline business to a near-term methane emissions intensity reduction target of 25 percent by 2030, as well as 45 percent overall greenhouse gas reduction by 2030.

While the methane commitment was compared to 2020 levels, the overall reduction goal – which will apply to any MDU-owned electric generation facilities – was based on 2005 levels. The company will continue shifting away from coal usage, ceasing operations, and moving to more economical options. However, it stated an ongoing commitment to natural gas – albeit cleaned up a bit.

“Natural gas will remain a foundational fuel in the effort to achieve a cleaner energy future, and we are committed to minimizing emissions as we provide the infrastructure to transport gas to markets where it is needed,” David Goodin, president and CEO of MDU Resources, said.

To help define reduction targets, MDU will lay out 2022 baselines from recordings of all scope 1 and scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. Scope 1 emissions refer to direct greenhouse (GHG) emissions from sources controlled or owned by MDU, while scope 2 emissions are indirect GHG emissions, such as those associated with purchases of electricity, steam, heat, or cooling.

In addition to greening efforts, the regulated energy delivery and construction materials and services corporation also joined the CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion Pledge this year and tied executive officer incentive compensation to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, committing the company to become more inclusive in the days ahead.
