American Electric Power (AEP) tapped Siemens to provide protection simulation operation software.

With Siemens PSS CAPE, AEP can implement complex protection simulations of the power grid, enabling additional renewable energy sources to be quickly integrated into the power grid. It also allows AEP to react more quickly to scenarios that endanger the stability of the network.

“We’re proud to partner with AEP as it works to break down data barriers across three traditionally separate utility departments – planning, protection, and operations,” Sabine Erlinghagen, CEO of Siemens Grid Software, said. “By leveraging a complete digital model of the physical grid, AEP can quickly adapt to grid changes while increasing renewable capacity efficiently, safely, and reliably. This is the reason we have launched the grid software suite to enable utilities to better manage the increasing complexity of power grids and, most importantly, to keep the grids stable.”

AEP has worked with Siemens since 2017, when it selected the firm to implement the core software of its Network Model Management solution. Building on this partnership, Siemens will now support AEP with its transition to the new protection simulation software from data enrichment to specialized software training and more.

The PSS CAPE software is modular, flexible, and highly interoperable with existing applications within AEP’s T-Nexus project. This enables AEP to scale performance as it creates a single network model for planning, operations, and protection.
